Google Tasks Recurring Reminders: Why They Sometimes Disappear
One of the most common questions in the Google Tasks community is why recurring tasks seem to vanish after you check them off. The behavior is confusing at first, but it follows a predictable pattern once you understand how Google Tasks handles repeat rules.
How Recurring Tasks Work in Google Tasks
When you set a task to repeat daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly, Google Tasks creates a schedule tied to the due date—not a standing copy that stays visible forever. Completing today's instance typically generates the next occurrence on its scheduled date.
- Daily repeats: The next task appears on the following calendar day at the same time (if a time is set).
- Weekly repeats: The next instance appears on the same weekday in the following week.
- Monthly/yearly: These follow the original due date anchor, which can shift around month-end edge cases.
Why It Looks Like Tasks Disappeared
Google Tasks filters completed items out of active views by default. After you complete a recurring task, you will not see the next occurrence until its due date approaches—unless you open the completed section or switch list views.
Practical Fixes
- Confirm the repeat rule on the task detail pane (web or mobile).
- Check the completed tasks section to verify the series still exists.
- Avoid editing the due date after completion unless you intend to shift the whole series.
- Use Google Calendar side panel to see upcoming repeated tasks on your calendar grid.
